Pass It On Education Tools: Bullying Prevention

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
Most of us have seen or experienced it firsthand---bullies at school.  Most commonly it is pretty tame intimidation or fault-finding...which can be destructive enough...but other times it becomes a pattern of abuse that continues until the abused is desperate enough to hurt themselves or others.

To whatever degree you view bullying as a significant issue on your campus or in your district, it is hard to deny that we could all be better informed about how to counter it.

The California Department of Education has a web page to get information out about this topic.  It includes a FAQ, diagnostic tools, an action plan, sample policies, and more.

Pass It On Education Content: History For Music Lovers

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
The New Yorker magazine recently spotlighted a group of history teachers who produce music video parodies to convey History content.  Their project History for Music Lovers currently has 50 videos of a surprisingly high quality.

Here is one example of many worthy videos!

Pass It On Education Tools: Classroom Jeopardy!

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
Many of us teachers have tried to replicate the "Jeopardy!" quiz game format, often using PowerPoint...or just a plain ole' white board!  Well, the actual software...even packaged with some hardware...is available here.

Create your own question sets...or use standardized sets organized by grade level.

Communication: Even A Newspaper Can Save You From A Bad Burn

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
For as relatively carefree and innocent as the 1950s are often characterized, this widely disseminated attempt to inform young people of emerging dangers reminds us how scary the time was for a nation just learning the extent of human destructive capabilities.

For some of you, this will bring back memories.  For others it can lend perspective.

Social Studies teachers, in particular, will no doubt appreciate you passing this along!

And remember: "If you don't know what to do, ask your teacher when this film is over!"

Teaching: A Nobel Profession

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
I enjoyed this two minute presentation about how one young lady, Sheila Joseph, chose a career in education over a career in law.  It is called "My Dream":

Communication: A Principal Communicating Effectively

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
Communication will be a new series on my blog. It will spotlight our attempt to disseminate information to---and regarding---young people.  The reverse flow of information is fair game too!  This should be fun!  The good, the bad, and the ugly!

To date, in this series I have presented a couple of less than perfect attempts to communicate with young people and their parents.  Today, I'd like to spotlight one very successful communication initiative embraced by Principal Kent Messer of Sloan Creek Middle School in Lovejoy ISD (Texas).

Principal Messer posts a detailed weekly message on his school website.  Each post is immediately visible upon visiting the page, old posts are archived to the left, and his constituents can count on him to post weekly...consistently.  Besides being an outlet for key information from administration and the school at-large, this web page in essence serves as a "history" archive for the campus and district.

If you would like to do this...or a blog like I am doing now---or any such automated task---and you don't know how to do so...email me at dan.s.martin@edclick.com.  I'll be happy to hear from you!  It is all so easy!

In The News: Your Medical Conditions In The News

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
Do you think your medical information is safe from release by your employer?  Think again...even if you work for a school district.

"The New York City school district did not violate the privacy rights of a teacher when it publicly disclosed her medical condition, a federal appeals court has ruled.

A panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, in New York City, ruled 2-1 on Tuesday that the disclosure of the teacher's fibromyalgia, a disorder that causes muscle pain and fatigue, in an investigative report made public on the Web did not violate her rights.

The case involves Dorrit Matson, who was a music teacher at a Manhattan public school in 2004 when she was scrutinized by the New York City school system's special commissioner for investigation for abuse of sick leave."

Pass It On Education Content: Doodling In Math Class

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
In earlier posts I presented incredible visual representations of talks by distinguished speakers through RSA Animate technology (look for "RSA Animate" in the keywords to the left).  These are excellent and worth watching if you have not had a chance to check them out.

Less sophisticated, but rather engaging, is Vi Hart's "Doodling In Math Class" series.  Each is only 4-5 minutes long.  She has these posted on her blog, but I had more success viewing them on YouTube here.

Two I especially liked are embedded below.

Your Math and Art teachers will no doubt enjoy these and may be able to use them in instruction.  I could envision them being used as the basis of an interdisciplinary lesson, to support Mathematics instruction in Art class.

In The News: Elementary Class Sizes May Increase

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
Tight budgets have forced many states to take controversial budget cutting measures, including one in Arizona that has denied funding for one-hundred previously approved organ transplants for patients who need them to prolong life.  Two of those one-hundred patients have already died.  Many bio-ethicists have expressed concern over this decision, including comments like "unprecedented" and "unimaginable".  Talk about death panels.

Well, Texas is also considering one very controversial measure to save funds.  See the article highlights below and/or the WFAA.com video.

"...Since 1984, the state has required schools to limit kindergarten to fourth grade classes to 22 students unless a school gets a waiver."

"...But, Luce, the chief of staff of the Texas Select Committee of Public Education who was one of the top proponents of the limit that was part of a massive school reform law back then, says the strict 22-1 ratio is no longer needed."

“...I think given the budget problems that we have today, you have to consider giving more flexibility to elementary schools," he said.

“...It was supported by research that existed at the time in a couple of other states that had actually studied that and said that smaller class size makes a difference..."

"...But, the state comptroller said scrapping the limit would save $558 million a year if it were replaced with a requirement for schools to just average 22 students per class. Luce thinks that would work, unlike the '80s, when no achievement and benchmark tests existed."

"...Teacher groups oppose relaxing the 22-1 law, claiming it has improved learning and 12,000 teacher jobs would be cut."

Trends: Most Americans Are Bilingual After All

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
I thought this was an interesting article in The Hartford Courant about the increasing frustration level of many college professors regarding student use of abbreviated (some would say "insanely" adulterated) English in place of proper English.  Many secondary teachers no doubt feel the same.

What are your thoughts?

Trends: CHOICE Program...Soon Big Districts Will Not Have A Choice But To Participate In Some Program Like This

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
Fort Worth ISD is conducting a "Choices Expo" this Friday and Saturday to educate parents and students about their Gold Seal Programs of Choice & Schools of Choice.  They tout this program as one that will "lead the nation in transforming the classroom experience as we know it."

On the web page below, you will find the following description of the program:

CHOICE

It’s what every parent wants – a learning experience that engages their child, supports his or her interests and opens pathways to success. The Fort Worth Independent School District is fulfilling that wish with new programs and schools that will lead the nation in transforming the classroom experience as we know it. Gone is the old “one size fits all” model of learning. The District is ushering in a new era with winning opportunities for every student at every skill level. Simply put, we are giving students and their parents the power of choice. It is the power to choose courses of study based on personal interests and passions. It is the power to take ownership in the education experience. And it is the power that comes with being engaged in learning and excited about the future.

Pass It On Education Tools: Inspiration Software

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
I first became acquainted with Inspiration Software, Inc. in the 90s...when I was teaching.  Over the years I've used it for many projects.  Students love creating with it.  It works well for brain storming and other such activities. The learning curve is short.  It is just an all-around helpful utility.  In fact, as a parent, I can't wait to get my almost five-year old using it!

I have used both "Inspiration" and "Kidspiration."  I can recommend them both.  I am not familiar with the company's other products.  Nor am I affiliated with this company in any way!  I just like their stuff!

Please leave a comment if you've used their other products, or you want to comment on this one!

Pass It On Education Tools: Are You In Compliance With Federal Law?

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the related Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) are two laws that "seek to ensure student and parental rights in education."

Every educator has heard of them...but how many are truly familiar with what they say?  Are you, as an educator and school, in compliance?  Do you know enough about what is in them to know?

If not, here is an excellent resource!  The U.S. Department Education at Ed.gov has a page dedicated to the Family Policy Compliance Office (FPCO).  This page has numerous rich resources for getting to really know what is in FERPA and PPRA.

Pass It On Education Tools: Data First

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
At first, the title of the website below was a bit off-putting.  "Data First" rang in contradiction to "Students First", a mantra of properly focused educators.  Can both come first?  Are they mutually exclusive?  Can one come first without the other?  Mere semantics?!?

No matter....this is a powerful website with a bunch of rich information designed to improve schools.
As they describe it
:

"Data First was created with the idea that data matters. Education data, used well, can help school board members and everyone else who cares about education to make good decisions – ones based, not on the loudest voices or the latest theories, but on the facts about what students need and how they are currently doing."

"...designed to guide people through the questions they should be asking about their schools, and point to the data sources that offer answers."

"...to link visitors to data they can use about schools, and to teach them how to use it better."

"...Data First is brought to you by the Center for Public Education – an initiative of the National School Boards Association."

Pass It On Education Content: Freakiest Places In The Solar System

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
Discover Magazine has a really cool photo gallery entitled, "Freakiest Places in the Solar System."  Seems like we all find this stuff fascinating.  Students will too!  As you educators know, young people love most anything with the word "freaky" in its title!

Pass this along to your favorite Science teacher!

In The News: Texas Takes Action Against For-Profit Schools

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
On November 26, I posted "Alleged Trade School Corruption," an investigative report by WFAA.   As I explained in that post:

As a high school educator, I regularly gave students advice about opportunities  they might pursue after secondary school.  I often encouraged them to go to college, join the armed services, or attend a trade school.

I thought about that advice when I read and heard the following report by WFAA.com.  I hope I never advised any of my students into this sort of money trap.

Here is an update on the story:

Pass It On Education Content: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us

EdConnections Posted by Dan S. Martin
So it is the new year!  A time we are all seemingly especially motivated to do something different from the year prior in an effort to somehow improve ourselves.

What motivates humans?  While the answer to this question is simply too broad and deep for a full explanation here...or perhaps anywhere, RSA Animate illustrates in 10 minutes Dan Pink's longer talk on the subject, entitled "Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us."

If you enjoy the presentation style, check out other RSA Animate pieces listed in the keywords index to the left of this screen!
