Education Ride 365: Red, Swollen Heinies In The Schools And The News!

Back on May 11th, I wrote a blog post about the near elimination of corporal punishment in public schools and some of the practical considerations contributing to this decline.  Alas, I discover that quite a few districts across America still exercise this discipline option today.

News from Texas this week (as reported in the two videos below) illustrates practical concerns I wrote about in my first post on this topic.

What do you think?

Does this form of punishment have a place
in our schools today?

Simply NO! It is a no-brainer to banish corporal punishment in schools. I would ask this of those who continue to use corporal punishment........Is there data to support the effectiveness of doing so?

Do you know how many times I had to grab my ankles and have my own rear slammed by a wooden paddle? So many times there aren't enough numbers created yet! LOL Really, it's probably about 40 or 50 times. Mostly it was for minor infractions too like not turning in stuff on time, or being late- that one kind of sucks when you miss the bus, or the occasional time when I could see getting it- disrespecting the teacher. They all meant go into a hallway or office, a witness called in, I'm told to grab my ankles, I bend over, grab them, then SMACK! Depending on the offense you're told to stand up, or the paddle is used again, and you hear another SMACK! About a second after the first, this insane rush of pain now flooded both cheeks. It made it rather difficult sitting back down in class to learn, most the time constantly thinking "stop thinking about the pain, and it'll go away faster" but all the while every time my heart would beat my butt would throb. Ah, the memories I have of the 80's, too bad they can't be nice memories in school of NOT having to have my butt smacked like it's a striking post! I had bruises left, my parents had the attitude "good, maybe next time you'll think twice", not this "let's sue the school" stuff!
