Discipline: What Matters And What Doesn't?

Dress code and related issues were a daily challenge as a school administrator.  Even when I worked in a school that had "uniforms," dress code matters were ever present.  I'll revisit dress at a later date.

Today, one of the "related issues."  --------> Hair.

Stories like the one below are not new, but they are becoming much more common.  Conformity is at an all time low.  Respect for authority may be at an all time low.  Relativism is at an all time high.  The trend seems to be clear.  What is a school to do?  Where is the line?  How slippery is the slope? 
What matters and what doesn't?

I think the question we should be asking is "Does this really matter?" before things like suspension and expulsion even enter into the conversation. We need to move from this mindset that made sence in the middle of the 20th century. Why do these kids feel the need to challenge the status quo? Who knows, they always do. If there is going to be a fight over it, lets make sure we are in the right. Lets make sure that before we spend great amounts of time an resources fighting something, that the goal all along was to improve education somehow. And finally, rules based on sex are out of date.

What does "in the right" mean in this debate? The oft cited guideline is that campus administration has the right to restrict clothing and other "issues" (hair styles, electronic devices, etc.) that create a disruption of the learning process. That is often cited as the determining justification (and determinant) for dress code rules and regulations. It is fairly broad and subjective...by design.

Conformity versus individualism. Where does our country stand? Where do our schools stand? Are the two in sync? How do schools respond to the spectrum of belief on this question? What is a school/district to do to appease the masses on many such questions where proponents of the extremes defiantly challenge the norms.....really, often at the expense of the masses in the middle on the issue.
