Friday, July 29, 2011 Can you nurture students' enthusiasm? We would like to nurture the enthusiasm of students, children, coworkers and ourselves. An enthusiastic life is simply a better life. But enthusiasm is synonymous with intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation comes from within. How can we build enthusiasm, intrinsic motivation, in others? We can't. Instead of "building" enthusiasm in others, we can nurture enthusiasm in others. Here are some ways.

Seth Stephens said... Great points, and all too true. If even 25% of teachers would really put forth a little extra effort to encourage some of these ideas in the classroom, I believe you would see a few more students, per teacher, really develop the passion for those classes that I remember having for just a few of my classes each school year. It is worthwhile to mention that those same classes were almost always the same classes where I earned my very highest grades each semester, and excelled at those subjects on my standardized tests. As a concession I will say that it can be daunting to find the additional time to institute new efforts and/or endeavours when some educators & administrators are already stretched so thin, so those are the times when you have to ask "How can I perform more efficiently?" or "What activities or commitments can I relieve myself of to free up some time to try these things that might really make a difference?"
